The Department of Transplantation at Lahey Hospital is an integrated, multidisciplinary group practice providing comprehensive care for liver and kidney transplant patients. We offer the option of live donor transplantation for both kidney and liver transplant patients.
Our transplant team is the most experienced in the region. Members of the team performed the first successful liver transplant in New England over 25 years ago. Lahey's live donor liver transplant program began in 1999 and is currently the largest program in the United States. Our patients benefit from expertise in innovative radiology that provides three-dimensional images of the liver and allows for in-depth analysis of the liver anatomy, resulting in improved patient outcomes.
Our kidney transplant surgeons are experts in minimally-invasive kidney donations; the majority of our live donor kidney transplants are performed using laparoscopic nephrectomy, a procedure that uses small ports and cameras instead of open surgery. Members of our team have been involved in kidney transplantation since 1970.
In addition to transplant surgeons, our team includes transplant hepatologists and nephrologists, as well as experienced transplant nurse coordinators, financial coordinators, social workers, dietitians and a dedicated transplant pharmacist. Psychiatry and infectious disease experts are also integral parts of the transplant team. Additional expertise in cardiology, endocrinology and vascular access surgery is available for transplant patients, if necessary.
The Department of Transplantation is located within Lahey Hospital Medical Center, which makes it easy to leverage the resources of a wide variety of specialized teams located under one roof. This allows our transplant team to provide the highest level of coordinated, state-of-the-art care possible.
