4. Be Referred to Lahey

The first step of the transplant process is to get in contact with our team here at the department of transplantation. If you’re not certain whether your condition warrants a liver transplant, you should still contact us so we may help you in determining whether transplant is in your best interest.

Your First Visit

During your first visit, you will meet our transplant nurse coordinator, who will be your point-of-contact through the entire transplant process. He or she will get you in contact with the rest of the team as necessary, and will also educate you on the entirety of the transplant procedure. We suggest you go through this timeline ahead of time to be prepared.

It is important to be referred to us by your physician for insurance reasons and transfer of medical records. This can be done through a physician referral, or a self-referral:

Physician Referral

Your physician, hepatologist (liver specialist), or gastroenterologist (gastrointestinal specialist) can contact a representative in Lahey’s Department of Transplantation and request an appointment for you. He or she will need to fax or mail your records for us to review. We will subsequently contact you to schedule an appointment.

Ask your physician to call us at (781) 744-2500

Self-Referral

Patients may also contact Lahey’s Department of Transplantation directly to request an appointment. In this case we will provide you with a specific list of required medical records. You will then need to ask your physician, hepatologist, or gastroenterologist to send them to us for review, and then we will schedule an appointment.
