In order to remain active on the UNOS wait-list, you must get lab tests done on a regular basis to update your MELD score (a score that reflects the severity of your condition). This is for your own benefit, as deterioration of your condition may place you higher on the wait-list. Failure to comply with the labwork schedule will hinder your status on the waitlist.
The transplant team will tell you whether you need to have bloodwork done weekly, monthly, every three months or annually. The higher your MELD score (see below), the more frequently it will need to be reassessed. Although time-consuming, following this schedule is in your own best interest; if your condition deteriorates, you’ll get a higher priority on the wait-list.
MELD stands for Model for End-Stage Liver Disease. The more severe your liver disease, the higher your MELD score will be, which can range from 6-40. To have your score updated, you must visit a lab in your area and have a few blood tests done. The lab technicians will inform the Lahey transplant team of your results. You may learn more details about the MELD score by visiting section: 7. Be Added to the Wait-List.
