As a donor, you won’t have to pay much out of pocket. Almost all of your bills will be paid for by the insurance company of the recipient, although some other details, such as pain medicine, may not be covered. Our financial coordinator will look into these details and let you know if any other costs are not covered.
The donor typically pays $0 in medical bills. Most donation-related costs are covered by the recipient’s insurance company, so you won’t have to worry about evaluation exams, hospitalization, surgery, in-hospital recovery, and donation-related follow-up care. You will, however, need to cover indirect costs such as transportation, food, lodging, and time missing from work.
Our financial coordinator will talk to you to further explain these details.
Donors typically don’t need to take medications, although some patients may choose to take painkillers after being released from the hospital. The kidney recipient will also be on painkillers, so his or her insurance won’t cover yours because they don’t want to allow duplicate prescriptions. Our financial coordinator can help you come up with a plan to cover these costs, should the need arise.
