5. Meet the Donor Team

Part of the evaluation process consists of holding consults with each of the specialists on our kidney donation team. They will independently evaluate you to ensure that you are a viable candidate with regards to their area of expertise.

Independent Donor Advocate

This individual’s sole focus is to protect and promote the best interests of the potential living donor. He or she is separate from the transplant department and will represent, educate and advise you. They’re well aware of the issues you may face, and will ensure that your decision to donate is well-informed, and free from pressure.

Living Donor Coordinator

This is a nurse who oversees your evaluations and coordinates your care along with the independent donor advocate and other members of the team. She’ll help you schedule appointments, although you’ll also need to take the lead with some of the tests. He or she will be your point-of-contact throughout most of the donation process.

Medical Physician

An expert in the kidney donation process, this physician will perform a physical exam and complete your medical history during your donor evaluations. Depending on your individual condition, he or she might need to refer you to other practitioners for additional testing (cardiology, pulmonary, etc.)

Social Worker & Psychiatrist

They will discuss with you any psychosocial issues that may be important to the success of donation. They’ll counsel you in the event of stress, anxiety, guilt, or otherwise. They’ll help us understand your motivation for donation, coping skills, and social support group so we may ensure donation is right for you.

Transplant Surgeon

This is a medical practitioner qualified to perform surgery. He or she will study scans of your kidneys to determine the safest way to conduct the operation, will perform the donation surgery, and may also oversee your postoperative care.

Pharmacist

This individual’s role is to assess your medication history, offer medication counseling, and educate you regarding post-donation prescription needs. Most donors won't need medication, although some occasionally choose to take painkillers.

Nutritionist

The nutritionist will study your eating habits to determine if you need to make modifications before donation. He or she will also make nutritional recommendations for your recovery.

Financial Coordinator

While the expenses associated with donation are covered by the insurance of the intended kidney recipient, our financial coordinator will still need to discuss your insurance coverage for certain exceptions. Some prescriptions, such as painkillers, aren't covered by the recipient's insurance.
