13. Donor Approval

Your donor will have to go through a confidential evaluation process before being approved to donate. The Living Donor Committee will meet to review the test results to determine whether donation is in the donor's best interest. During this period, you will have to continue your clinic visits and lab tests.

Donor Accepted

Congratulations! Your donor has been found to be a suitable candidate for donation. We will proceed with teaching him or her the details of surgery, and getting their surgical consent. We’ll then schedule a date for the donation surgery.

Incompatible Donor

There is a chance that your intended donor is of an incompatible tissue or blood type. If this is the case, you may still participate in donation by performing a "swap" with another incompatible pair. For further details of how we solve this problem, visit the next section: Kidney Paired Donation Program.

Donor Deferred

Additional testing or appointments will be necessary before the committee can arrive at a concrete decision. They will inform the donor which additional tests they’ll need to go through, and then re-assess the results.

Donor Declined

Based on the donor's medical, psychological, or social condition, the committee has determined that donation is not in their best interest. If this happens, you may still receive a kidney transplant through the waitlist, or from another living donor. You'll remain on the waitlist during the donor evaluation period to avoid losing time in case this occurs.
